Satnam Singh Sandhu is a Member of Parliament in India’s Upper House, the Rajya Sabha, a globally respected educationist, and a committed public servant whose life journey embodies the values of perseverance, service, and inclusive nationalism. He was born on 11 September 1969 in Rasoolpur village of Ferozepur district in the northern Indian state of Punjab, to Pipal Singh Sandhu, a dedicated farmer, and Kashmir Kaur, whose quiet strength and moral grounding shaped his character.

Raised in a humble agrarian household and inspired by his freedom-fighter grandfather, Sandhu imbibed early the virtues of hard work, resilience, patriotism, and service to society.

From modest beginning as a farmer himself, his rise has been marked by determination and a deep belief in education as the most powerful catalyst for national transformation. Confronting early academic challenges himself, Sandhu transformed personal adversity into a lifelong mission to democratise access to quality education and prepare India’s youth for global leadership.

This vision took institutional shape with the founding of the Chandigarh Group of Colleges in 2001 and later Chandigarh University, which today stands among India’s leading universities, hosting students from more than 100 countries and fostering innovation, research, and global collaboration. Over more than two decades, his work in higher education has contributed significantly to India’s emergence as a global knowledge destination.

In recognition of his exceptional contribution to education and social development, Satnam Singh Sandhu was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Hon’ble President of India in January 2024. As a parliamentarian, he brings a practitioner’s perspective to policymaking—one rooted in institution-building, grassroots engagement, and long-term national vision.

Closely aligned with the transformative leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as his adarsh (role model and ideal), Sandhu actively promotes and advances flagship Government of India initiatives such as Viksit Bharat @2047, National Education Policy 2020, Skill India, Startup India, Digital India, Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Prime Minister Modi has referred to him as a trusted Lieutenant reflecting shared values and a common commitment to building a confident, self-reliant, and inclusive India.

In Parliament, Satnam Singh Sandhu has emerged as a constructive and people-centric voice, consistently raising issues that reflect grassroots realities and India’s future aspirations. He has spoken on strengthening the education ecosystem through effective implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, globalisation of Indian universities, skill development, youth employability, and innovation-led growth.

Sandhu has also highlighted concerns related to farmers’ welfare, minority empowerment, social harmony, health and wellness, and the need for inclusive development that reaches the last mile. With a balanced blend of Punjab’s earthy wisdom and a global outlook, he uses the Rajya Sabha as a platform to amplify citizens’ voices while contributing thoughtful, solution-oriented interventions aligned with the vision of a rising India.

An ardent nationalist with a global outlook, Sandhu often articulates, “Bharat has given me identity, values, and purpose, and my life is devoted to contributing to a developed and compassionate nation.”

His nationalism is inclusive and civilisational in spirit, rooted in India’s pluralism and its enduring philosophy of unity in diversity. A respected voice among minority communities, he has consistently worked to strengthen interfaith harmony and social cohesion, believing that diversity is India’s greatest strength and moral compass.

Beyond education and governance, Sandhu is deeply engaged in community service, health, and wellness initiatives. Guided by the Sikh principle of seva (selfless service), he runs two prominent non-governmental organisations — the Indian Minorities Federation and the New India Development Foundation — through which he supports programmes in healthcare access, preventive wellness, education for the underprivileged, social empowerment, and community development. His philanthropic work reflects a conviction that true leadership is measured not by position, but by positive impact on people’s lives.

Sandhu’s influence also extends to global policy and thought leadership. He is a member of the Think20 (T20) Core Group under the G20, contributing to international discourse on education, inclusive growth, and sustainable development. He also serves as Vice President of the Education Promotion Society for India, where he plays a key role in shaping policy dialogue around India’s higher education ecosystem and global academic engagement.

On the international stage, Sandhu has emerged as a bridge between India and its global diaspora. He has actively participated in and addressed large pro-India and pro-Modi outreach programmes in the United States and foreign nations. In his addresses to overseas Indians, he has been highlighting India’s democratic vitality, economic resurgence, and the growing role of the diaspora as partners in India’s development and global influence.

A passionate advocate of environmental responsibility, Sandhu aligns with India’s global message of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” emphasising sustainable development and stewardship of the planet. A proud son of Punjab, deeply rooted in Punjabiyat yet global in vision, he is supported by his wife Damandeep Kaur Sandhu and their two sons Deep Inder Singh Sandhu and Jai Inder Singh Sandhu.
